MEETING POINT & TIME

Your guide will meet with you at 8.30am on the first day of the trip at your accomodation.

ITINERARY

Note that this itinerary is a sample only. Your final itinerary is subject to weather and other conditions. We can customise the trip for you to be leisurely or more challenging depending on your goals. The area offers everything from easy off track hiking through to challenging steep exposed alpine ridge walking sometimes requiring the use of a rope.

Day 1

We will pick you up from your accomodation at 8.30am. The trip starts with a 1 hour drive from Queenstown to the Matukituki Valley near the Mt Aspiring National Park. From here we will meet our helicopter and then fly into the Mt Aspiring Chalet. On the first day get familiar with the area with a hike to a spectacular snowmelt and rainfall fed alpine waterfall with crystal clear water. We have good views of the Albert Burn valley and the peaks of the Mt Aspiring area.

Day 2

After breakfast we will pack lunch and climb to the summit of Dragonfly Peak. This is a challenging off track adventure climbing a steep ridge directly above the Chalet. From higher on the ridge we will have great views of the peaks of Buchanan and Harris Mountains, the Matukituki Valley, and the Mt Aspiring National Park. It is also possible to see North to Mt Cook (New Zealand’s highest mountain) and south to Fiordland on a clear day.

Day 3

Today we will traverse Galactic Ridge. This ridge climbs north from the Mt Aspiring Chalet and offers incredible views of the glaciers of the Mt Aspiring National Park. There are spectacular and very exposed sections on the ridge making for great photographic opportunities. We can walk as far as we like along the ridge making it a short walk or a full day alpine traverse to the summit at the end of the ridge.

TRIP NOTES

Experience required
No previous experience required. For the more adventurous hikes you need to be comfortable travelling through untracked areas and over uneven terrain. We can tailor make the trip to your experience and preferences.
Clothing & equipment

Hiking & climbing in the New Zealand mountains requires that you have high quality equipment and clothing due to the extremes of weather we experience. Please ensure you look carefully at our equipment checklist. At the start of the trip your guide will go through your equipment and make sure that you have everything that you need for the trip. Please organise to have your extra equipment stored at your accomodation for the duration of the trip.

It is important that you keep as close as possible to the equipment checklist. The focus is on ensuring that you have the equipment you need, but also on keeping your pack as light as possible. If your guide is meeting you at your accomodation for the start of the trip it would be helpful if you have all your equipment and clothing organised and laid out in a logical fashion so they can check that everyone has the right equipment and clothing for the trip.

Mike from Queenstown Mountain Guides arranged a fabulous back-country hiking & climbing trip for myself and my two children. He did a great job of picking a route that was adventurous and challenging but still suitable for a family. He was super professional to deal with on all aspects of the trip. As a guide, he is the real deal: extremely experienced, calm and professional, and very pleasant company.
